Syngman Rhee (Korean: 이승만 Yi Seung-man, March 26, 1875 – July 19, 1965), birth name Seung-yong (Korean: 승룡), courtesy name Unam (Korean: 우남), was the first President of South Korea (1948–1960) and the first President of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (1919–1925). He was also nominated as the first Chairman of the People's Republic of Korea (1945–1946), but he did not assume office.
